Threaded inserts provide strong re-useable thread forms in soft materials such as:

• inserts for plastics
• inserts for castings
• inserts for composites and
• inserts for wood.

The substrate materials, being soft, cannot themselves withstand multiple installation of fasteners, high tensile or torque loads without the danger of failure.

The use of threaded inserts increases the effective area in contact with the substrate therefore maximising its capability to withstand these forces. Whilst being constructed of stronger material the insert will allow multiple installations of the mating screw without wear or premature failure.

Designers should ensure that they are correctly specified to suit the particular characteristics of the substrate.
